Over the past few years, my experience with The Hair Shack has gone far beyond that of a regular salon visit. As a client, I have had the privilege of witnessing the journey of Justin and Alex – two individuals whose passion, professionalism, and dedication have shaped The Hair Shack into something truly remarkable.
This is very much a personal opinion, based on my experience as a loyal client who has, over time, also developed a genuine friendship with them. That said, my admiration is not based on personal closeness alone, but rather on the consistent way I have been treated year after year, appointment after appointment.

Justin, in particular, deserves recognition for his exceptional business mindset, his honesty, and the steady, respectful way in which he leads. Together, he and Alex have created an environment that is not only welcoming and professional, but also forward-thinking and inspiring.

I live in the rural town of Karkloof in the KZN Midlands, a stressful two hour drive from Shaka’s Rock/Salt Rock. In 2020, quite by chance, I came across an article in The Ballito Magazine about the newly opened “The Hair Shack” while waiting for my mother to be discharged from Gateway Hospital after surviving Covid. I decided to book an appointment—and from the moment I walked in, it was the most refreshing and joyful experience!
I was warmly welcomed by Alex, Justen’s wife, with a friendliness that felt more like being reunited with family than arriving as a new client in need of a little therapy. A kind assistant, dressed in a vibrant Shweshwe apron, quickly draped me in a matching gown and offered me a hot beverage of my choice. This thoughtful touch immediately lifted my spirits and eased the worry of my mother’s recent hospital stay. The salon’s colourful, joyful energy was infectious, and my mood was lifted even further when I was greeted by Justen himself—clad in a cheerful “Madiba Shirt”—with his trademark laughter and lively banter. And all this before I had even made it to the basin for not just a hair wash, but a much needed stress releasing head and neck massage by one of the caring and attentive assistants.
What makes “The Hair Shack” truly unique is not only its vibrant atmosphere, but also its consistency. Each visit brings the same excellence in client service, thanks to a remarkably low staff turnover and a team that genuinely cares. Instead of pushing unnecessary products, Justen guides clients on how to allocate their hair care budget effectively. His mastery of colour is unmatched—I have never once needed to bring a photo of the shade I wanted. From my very first consultation, I felt a deep sense of trust and relief.
Although I am confident and love bold colours, I had never felt brave enough to carry off a haircut that truly reflected my personality. I always erred on the side of caution. Justen changed that. He has taken me to bold, beautiful new heights—striking, stylish, and perfectly me—without ever crossing into eccentric or loud. Despite the 115km / 2 hour drive from Karkloof to Shaka’s Rock, a morning at “The Hair Shack” not only leaves me looking great, it leaves me feeling great!
The name, “The Hair Shack”, says it all: unpretentious, welcoming, and excellent value for money, yet consistently delivering results of international standard. Justen’s career has taken him across multiple continents, and he brings that global expertise to every client. In addition to his extensive international experience, he is also an award winning stylist recognized for his mastery of colour.
